School Groups: One Room School Experience Tour Agenda
Arrival
School
Children will line up, short first, boys on road side of sidewalk, girls other side and wait for invitation to enter the school. Children can participate in activities such as schooling in reading, writing, and arithmetic. Students will try their handwriting with stick pens dipped into ink.
Recess
You, the classroom teacher, are in charge of outside recess time. Suggested activities include:
Housekeeping Notes
- Someone will meet your bus and greet the students. (We have only 1 volunteer. Please bring volunteers if you wish. We can then set up multiple stations.)
- Visiting schools will be asked to split into two groups when they exit buses. Group 1 will have "school" first while Group 2 will stay outside for 'recess'. Then groups will exchange places.

- Teach your students traditional and singing games. See Games to Play for suggestions.
- We have provides some supplemental materials you may chose to use at recess or prior to your visit such as a coloring sheet, suggested games, puzzles, etc. See the links on this page. Recess is also the time to fold their paper cup if they wish to drink water!
- Utilize New Era provided items such as individual jump ropes, balls, and a collection of old toys (Jacob's ladder, etc. to help fill in your time. (Maypole, seesaw, tug of war and stilts, at your discretion).
- While outside, we would like the children to notice the outhouse/coal shed combination building.
- We will have an outside table of items to sell if you choose to tell your students to bring money. Note: Items for sale ($1.00 suckers, $5.00 note cards, $0.35 pencils, marbles and folk toys that range from $3.00 to $6.00, tee -shirts $9.00, etc.)
- Recess rain plan will be wooden toys, checkers, etc. under a tent. (or in an area of Mineral Wells School). You may wish to bring paper and pencil activities as back-up.
Housekeeping Notes
- Allow 1-1/2 to 2 hours for the program.
- Restroom visits will need to be escorted to MW School. Please have your ID if the restroom trip is needed.
- You will want the students to dress for the weather, as we are outside about 50 minutes!
